X Marks the Spot

Let me be honest with you — this one gave me a little writer's block.

And perhaps that is fitting. Because X has always carried a certain weight for me. As a youngster in school, X was the mark that landed on my page when I had gotten something wrong. That red X was not subtle. It announced itself. It said: error. Incorrect. Try again.

And so for a long time, X lived in my mind as a symbol of failure. Of falling short. Of not being enough.

Today, I am flipping that narrative entirely.

X Is Not What You Think

Think about what X actually is, geometrically. It is two lines crossing. It is an intersection — a place where paths meet, where directions multiply, where something new becomes possible.

In maps and treasure hunts, X marks the spot where something valuable is buried. In contracts and agreements, X marks the spot where you sign your name and claim what is yours. In mathematics, X is not a failure — it is the unknown we are solving for, the variable that holds the answer we have not yet found.

The X we got in our school books was never placed there to deter us from achieving. It was placed there to send us back to the drawing board. To say: there is an error in your calculation, in your reasoning — go back and find it. That X was an invitation to a do-over.

And in that do-over? Sometimes there was a light bulb moment. A sudden clarity. A wondering of how on earth we got it wrong the first time — because the right answer, once seen, seemed so obvious.

The Obstinance That Keeps Us Stuck

But here is the part worth sitting with: sometimes, because of our own obstinance, that X remained unchanged. We saw the correction was needed, and we dug in anyway. We held our original answer. We refused the do-over.

And so we missed the second chance.

I have done this. I suspect you have too. We hold a position not because we are certain it is right, but because changing it feels like admitting we were wrong. And admitting we were wrong feels, somehow, like losing.

But what if the do-over is not a loss? What if it is the whole point?

X Marks the Spot Where You Begin Anew

Today, I want you to embrace your X.

Not as a mark of failure. Not as evidence of inadequacy. But as the intersection — the precise point in your life where you consciously decide to do things differently.

Even if in the doing it is not perfect, do it anyway. Perfection is not the goal. Movement is.

If you feel you are standing at that intersection right now — the X of your life — here is what I want you to do: pause, assess, and move. Not with recklessness, but with confidence. The kind of confidence that comes not from certainty, but from the decision to trust yourself enough to take the next step.

X marks the spot on that contract that leads to the ownership of the dream home. The dream business. The life you have been holding back on. X marks the spot where you sign your name and say: this is mine, and I am ready.

Whatever you have been waiting to begin, whatever commitment you have been circling without landing — today, at that intersection, you consciously choose to move fearlessly.

Pause. Assess. Move.

X marks the spot where you begin anew.

Reflect: Your X Questions

Take a quiet moment with these. Let the questions sit before you answer them.

  • Where in your life have you been treating your X as a mark of failure rather than an invitation to try again? What would change if you reframed it?

  • Is there a do-over you have been resisting — a correction you know needs to be made, but pride or fear has kept you from making? What is the cost of leaving that X unchanged?

  • What intersection are you standing at right now? What is the commitment, the decision, the next step that is waiting for you to claim it?

  • If you moved forward today — not perfectly, but confidently — what becomes possible?

What is your X marking the spot for right now? We would love to hear from you — write to us at [email protected].
